Fin dalle origini tutti i club tedeschi erano interamente costituiti sotto forma di associazioni polisportive, forma che ne ha garantito sempre sostenibilità, l’ampia partecipazione e prosperità all’interno della propria comunità. Successivamente, alla fine degli anni 90, ai club venne concessa la facoltà di separare le attività relative al calcio professionistico in una società di capitali. Da allora è stata introdotta, per salvaguardare il legame con la comunità locale, la deroga del 50% +1. Nonostante questa possibilità molti club hanno mantenuto la propria forma di associazione.
